Active Membership

NYS IAAI’s Active Members are representatives of government agencies or representatives of businesses who are engaged in the control of the crime of arson.  Our active members are, among many things, paid or volunteer city, town, county, state fire investigators, fire marshals, police investigators, federal agents, SIU investigators, Attorneys, and engineers.  Active members enjoy free member’s-only virtual training, discounted tuition for in-person training, subscription to our bi-annual, award-winning magazine, networking opportunities at the NYS IAAI President’s Reception, the right to vote for candidates for our Board of Directors, and the ability to serve on our Board of Directors.

To be eligible as an Active Member, you must be at least 18 years old, be of sound character, reside in New York State, and be an active representative of a government agency or business engaged in the control of the crime of arson.

For those organizations that have several employees that are also NYS IAAI members, you may create a profile within our membership system. This free service allows your organization to manage, update and modify your employees’ NYS IAAI memberships.

Associate Membership

NYS IAAI’s Associate Membership program was designed to allow those indirectly involved in fire investigations, such as insurance professionals (adjusters, examiners, etc.) and college students, to participate in our Chapter’s training and education activities.  Associate Members share nearly the same benefits as an Active Member – free member’s-only virtual training, discounted tuition for in-person training, subscription to our bi-annual, award-winning magazine, and networking opportunities at the NYS IAAI President’s Reception.  Associate Members are prohibited from holding positions on our Board of Directors or voting in Officer elections.  Importantly, this does not prevent the Associate Member from volunteering and helping the Chapter by working on many of our essential committees and working groups.

To be eligible to join as an Associate Member as an insurance professional, you must be over 18 years of age and of sound character, reside or be actively employed by a business engaged in fire loss investigation and mitigation in New York State, provide proof of employment and job duties, and list at least one NYS IAAI Active Member as a reference.

To be eligible as an Associate Member college student, you must

  • be over 18 years of age and sound character
  • reside or attend college in New York State
  • be seeking a two or four-year degree (or graduate degree) in fire science, fire investigation, fire engineering technology, fire protection engineering, electrical engineering, forensics, criminalistics, or a related degree from an accredited institution
  • be minimally enrolled in eight credit hours in the identified degree program
  • provide proof of enrollment
  • not be a full-time law enforcement or fire department employee
  • have less than two years of fire investigator or law enforcement experience.

Sustaining Membership

NYS IAAI’s Sustaining Membership program allows individuals, organizations, and businesses to support our organization’s critical training and professional development missions.  Sustaining Members receive a handsome handcrafted solid wood plaque with an inlay of New York State, our Chapter seal, and the words “Sustaining Member, New York IAAI”.  Each year of continued membership provides an additional year ribbon for the plaque.

Though they provide critical support to the Chapter’s goals by providing an annual membership fee of $200, Sustaining Members have no voting privileges in Board elections nor the ability to hold an office within the Chapter.
